Why Natural Photos Often Become the Ones We Love Most

There are usually two kinds of photographs people think about before booking a photoshoot.

The one where everyone is looking at the camera.

And everything else.

The funny thing is, while the perfectly smiling photograph often makes it onto the Christmas card, it’s frequently the “everything else” photographs that people end up loving the most.

The laugh.

The look between two people.

The child running away from the group.

The dog doing exactly the opposite of what we planned.

Those photographs tell a story.

Your life probably isn’t perfectly posed

Most families don’t spend their Saturday afternoons standing shoulder-to-shoulder and smiling in the same direction.

Your real life is movement, conversation, chaos, hugs, laughter and little moments you probably don’t notice until someone freezes them in a photograph.

That is what I love capturing.

While I will always make sure we capture the traditional photographs too, I’m also constantly watching for the moments happening around them.

When you’re living through a particular stage of life, it can feel ordinary.

Your child holding your hand.

The way your dog follows you everywhere.

Your parents laughing together.

Your team working in the business you’ve spent years building.

A room full of people celebrating an event that took months to organise.

At the time, those things might not feel remarkable.

Years later, they can mean everything.

That is one of the things I love most about photography.

It takes something happening for a fraction of a second and gives you the opportunity to keep it.

Natural doesn’t mean completely unplanned

There’s a common misconception that candid photography means the photographer simply stands back and hopes something interesting happens.

Good natural photography still involves a lot of thought.

Where is the best light?

What is happening in the background?

Where should everyone stand?

What angle tells the story best?

What distractions need to be removed?

When should I give direction and when should I leave the moment alone?

The aim is to do that thinking for you so you don’t have to.

You get to enjoy what is happening.

I’ll worry about capturing it.

This matters in business photography too

Natural photography isn’t only for families.

Customers want to understand what it actually feels like to work with a business.

A headshot is useful.

But so is seeing your team interacting.

Your venue full of people.

Your staff helping customers.

The atmosphere at your event.

The details behind your product or service.

Those photographs help people picture themselves working with you before they’ve even made contact.

Instead of simply telling people what your business is like, good photography can show them.

Capture the chapter you’re in

There will always be another reason to wait.

When the kids are older.

When work settles down.

When you lose a little weight.

When everyone’s schedules line up.

When the weather is perfect.

But life keeps moving while we wait for everything to be just right.
