You Don’t Need to Be Good in Front of the Camera

One of the most common things I hear before a photoshoot is:

“I’m terrible in front of the camera.”

Sometimes it’s followed by, “My partner hates photos,” “My kids won’t sit still,” or “I have no idea what I’m supposed to do.”

The good news is, you don’t need to know.

That’s my job.

At Voyage Today Photography, I photograph families, businesses, events and people across Maitland, Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, and my goal isn’t to make everyone stand perfectly still and smile at the camera.

It’s to create an environment where you can relax enough to actually be yourself.

Good photos don’t come from perfect posing

There’s a time and place for direction.

I’ll help you with where to stand, what to do with your hands, where to look and how to position yourself so the photos look their best.

But once that foundation is there, some of the best images happen in between.

It might be your child laughing at something completely unrelated to the photoshoot.

Your dog deciding they’ve had enough of sitting nicely.

Your partner making you laugh.

Your team chatting together instead of staring awkwardly at the camera.

Those moments are often what make photographs feel real.

Your kids don’t need to “behave”

Parents often arrive worried that their children won’t cooperate.

I don’t expect children to behave like tiny adults for a photoshoot.

They’re allowed to move.

They’re allowed to laugh.

They’re allowed to explore.

They’re even allowed to need a break.

Instead of constantly asking children to smile, I prefer to create situations where there is actually something worth smiling about.

That difference is what turns a staged photograph into a genuine memory.

You don’t need to know how to pose

You are not expected to arrive knowing how to pose.

Most people don’t spend their everyday life wondering whether their shoulder is on the correct angle or where their hands should go.

I’ll guide you.

The aim is to give you enough direction that you feel confident without making the experience feel stiff or overly rehearsed.

For business photography, this also means thinking about how you want your customers to perceive you.

Professional?

Approachable?

Creative?

Premium?

Relaxed?

The way we use location, posture, lighting, expression and composition can all help communicate that.

Photoshoots should feel good too

The finished photographs matter.

But I also believe the experience of creating them matters.

Years from now, I don’t want you to look at a photograph and remember how stressed everyone was trying to make it perfect.

I want you to remember the people you were with, the stage of life you were in and how it felt.

Photography is about more than looking good in a frame.

It is about capturing the people and moments that matter while they are here.
